Chapter 14
Heart Demon Tea Trial
Three in the afternoon.
The old woman did not order tea today.
She pushed the door open, sat down, and said directly:
"Xiao Mo, today you brew a pot of Heart Tea."
"What is Heart Tea?"
"It is a pot you brew for yourself. Not with tea — with whatever has been pressing on your heart."
"How do I brew it?"
"Think of the one thing you are most afraid of losing — focus on it, hold it. Then brew tea the usual way, following the old method."
Su Mo closed her eyes.
What was she most afraid of losing?
The answer came without thinking:
Afraid that she had spent six years doing one thing, only to find in the end that it was not worth it.
Afraid that she was not "unrecognized talent," but simply "unwilling to admit she was ordinary."
She gathered these thoughts into the moment the water poured.
Water fell from the spout into the cup.
The color of the tea —
Not any color she had ever seen.
Different angles, different colors. Sometimes gray, sometimes gold, sometimes nothing at all.
Su Mo took a sip of the Heart Tea.
Bitter.
Then astringent.
Then — the bitterness receded.
Then there was no taste at all.
Then — a faint returning sweetness.
Not sweet — familiar.
The tea her grandmother used to brew when she was a child.
The first pot she had brewed for herself on the day she opened the shop.
Then her face was wet.
Not weeping.
The tears came on their own —
She understood.
"What I am afraid of is not that it is not worth it — I am afraid that it is worth it, and no one knows."
Su Mo looked down at the cup.
The tea dregs at the bottom had formed a complete pattern —
Not the character for "wait."
A more complex shape.
She recognized it:
A tree's root system.
Below the tree, a line of tiny characters:
【Tea Cultivation Record · Page 14】 Tea cultivator — the Heart Tea is the spiritual root, Tea Awareness is the realm. From this point on — she would not walk alone.
She pulled out The Tea Cultivation Record — the pages that had been blank before were now covered in text.
They had been there all along. She just could not read them before.
Today every regular came in —
They had not arranged it.
They just all came.
Chen Lu finished her tea and said, "Today's pot smells like a mountain after rain."
Xiao Yang said, "Like the feeling of finishing a book — the moment you type the last period and take a breath."
Sister Wen said, "Nothing special — just that today I do not need to bum hot water."
Her cup was empty.
But she kept holding it to her lips, never setting it down.
Nine-thirty at night.
Closing time.
Everyone had left.
Su Mo was turning off lights, washing cups, clearing tables —
She looked up.
Xu Nian was still sitting by the window.
He was not editing photos.
His camera was on the table — lens cap on.
He was looking out the window —
Outside the window it was dark. He was watching her reflection in the glass as she cleared the tables.
Su Mo: "You are not leaving?"
Xu Nian: "You go first. I will lock up for you."
Su Mo's hand stopped on the keys —
She never let guests lock up.
But she did not know why, she set the keys on the table.
Xu Nian did not take the keys. He did not stand up.
He just sat there, watching Su Mo's reflection in the glass, waiting for her to leave.
When Su Mo left, she looked back —
Xu Nian was still sitting there.
She had never thought about what the tea house looked like after closing.
Six years.
No one had ever stayed in her tea house after she left.
